Introduction to River Sluicing

River sluicing is one of the most established ways to process gold-bearing stream material. A properly positioned sluice uses the river’s current to separate dense material from lighter gravel, allowing you to process considerably more material than you could with a pan alone.

The equipment is simple, but successful recovery depends on three things working together: location, water flow, and consistent feeding.

How a River Sluice Works

A river sluice is a narrow channel containing riffles, matting, or another recovery surface. As water carries classified material through the box:

  • Material enters the sluice: Classified gravel is introduced gradually at the head of the box.
  • The material stratifies: Water movement allows denser particles to settle below lighter gravel.
  • Recovery zones retain heavies: Riffles and matting create protected areas where gold and black sand can collect.
  • Lighter material exits: Properly adjusted flow carries waste material out without overwhelming the recovery bed.

A sluice does not identify gold automatically. It concentrates the heavy material so you can recover and finish it more efficiently.

Choosing a Productive Location

Promising locations include:

  • Inside bends: Water slows and may deposit heavier material.
  • Behind large boulders: Protected downstream zones can collect heavies.
  • Bedrock cracks: Natural crevices can retain gold below moving gravel.
  • Gravel bars: Black sand and mixed heavy material can indicate useful sampling ground.
  • Below changes in gradient: Gold may settle where fast water enters a slower section.

Setting Up Your River Sluice

  1. Confirm that sluicing is permitted. Check current land status, mining claims, seasonal restrictions, and equipment rules before entering the water.
  2. Select stable flowing water. You need enough current to clear lighter material without creating violent flow through the recovery bed.
  3. Position the sluice in the current. Place it where water reaches the full width of the box instead of favoring one side.
  4. Secure the sluice. Use stable rocks or the manufacturer’s anchoring method so the box cannot shift, twist, or wash downstream.
  5. Adjust the slope gradually. There is no universal angle. Start conservatively and adjust according to the sluice design, water depth, matting, and material.
  6. Run a clean-water test. Confirm that the recovery surface is evenly covered and that water exits without backing up.

Finding the Correct Water Flow

The familiar “5–7 degree” recommendation is only a starting reference—not a rule. Two sluices at the same angle can behave very differently because of their width, mat profile, riffles, water volume, and feed material.

Watch what the sluice is doing:

  • If rocks remain lodged throughout the box, increase flow slightly, increase slope slightly, or reduce the feed rate.
  • If the recovery zones scour clean immediately, reduce the flow or slope.
  • If water favors one side, level the sluice from side to side before making other adjustments.
  • If clay balls travel through intact, break them apart before feeding. More water alone may not release the gold trapped inside.

Change only one variable at a time. That makes it possible to see which adjustment actually improved performance.

Classify Before You Feed

Classification produces a more consistent feed and reduces the turbulence caused by oversized rocks. Match the screen size to your particular sluice and expected gold.

Classification improves efficiency, but it should not become a reason to discard potentially productive oversized material without checking it. Inspect compacted clay, bedrock fragments, and material containing visible quartz or mineralization before treating it as waste.

Operating the Sluice

  • Feed small, consistent amounts at the head of the sluice.
  • Allow each scoop to clear before adding more.
  • Break apart clay and compacted material completely.
  • Watch for rocks blocking the recovery zones.
  • Keep the box level from side to side.
  • Stop and clean the sluice before concentrates overwhelm the matting.

Faster feeding does not always mean more production. If the recovery bed is overloaded, you may process more gravel while recovering less gold.

Test Your Tailings

Your tailings provide the clearest evidence of how well the sluice is working. Periodically pan a sample of the material exiting the box.

If the tailings contain recoverable gold:

  • Reduce the feed rate.
  • Check that the sluice is level.
  • Adjust the water flow or slope slightly.
  • Confirm that oversized material is not disrupting the recovery bed.
  • Clean the matting if it is overloaded.

Continue testing after adjustments. Published settings can help you begin, but your tailings determine whether the setup is actually working.

Cleanup and Final Recovery

  1. Stop feeding material and allow clean water to clear loose gravel.
  2. Lift the sluice carefully without dumping concentrates downstream.
  3. Remove the matting or recovery components over a bucket or tub.
  4. Rinse all captured material into the container.
  5. Pan the concentrates slowly and collect visible gold with a snuffer bottle.
