Pre-Trip Planning
- Research prospecting sites — use our Gold Prospecting Locations Guide and Top Locations 2026
- Check local regulations and obtain necessary permits
- Review seasonal conditions — see Pacific Northwest Seasonal Guide
- Check weather forecast and stream flow (USGS gauges)
- Notify family/friends of itinerary and expected return time
Prospecting Gear

- Two-way radios (for groups or remote areas)
Food, Water & Camp
- Water (minimum 2L per person per day) or filtration system
- High-energy snacks and meals
- Camping gear if staying overnight
- Trash bags — pack out everything you pack in
For Groups
- Designate a group leader and communication plan
- Establish clear goals and safety protocols
- Redundant first aid kit
- Plan for varying skill levels — beginners can start with the Starter Pan Bundle
- Shared equipment list to avoid duplication
Environmental & Legal
- Verify land ownership and claim status
- Backfill all holes and leave no trace
- Respect private property and sensitive ecosystems
- Follow all state and federal mining regulations
