PETG vs. Polypropylene: The Science of Cold-Water Panning

Two pans can look identical on a shelf and behave completely differently in a 36°F creek. The difference usually isn't the shape — it's the plastic.

Most budget pans are polypropylene (PP). It's cheap, it's easy to mold, and in a warm garage it feels fine. Our core line is engineering-grade PETG, and we build with it for a specific reason: the riffles have to survive the conditions you actually pan in.

Cold makes plastic brittle

Every plastic gets stiffer and more brittle as it gets colder — the question is *how fast*. Polypropylene's toughness falls off as it approaches freezing, which is exactly the water temperature a lot of the best gold sits in. Drop a cold PP pan on a rock, or flex it hard against packed gravel, and it's far more likely to crack or chip.

PETG keeps more of its impact strength down into genuinely cold territory — we rate our pans to hold up to roughly −40°F before embrittlement becomes the concern. In plain terms: it takes the creek, the truck bed, and the occasional drop without turning fragile.

UV is the slow killer

Heat and cold get the attention, but sunlight does the quiet damage. High-altitude UV breaks plastic down over time — surfaces chalk, colors fade, and the material gets weaker where it counts. PETG resists UV yellowing and surface breakdown better than standard PP, so a pan that lives in your pack and your truck holds up season after season instead of degrading after one summer.

Why a tougher material means more gold

This isn't durability for its own sake. A riffle only works if it keeps its edge. When cheap plastic goes brittle and chalky, those crisp riffle edges round off — and a rounded riffle stops creating the low-pressure pocket that drops gold out of suspension. You lose recovery without ever knowing it, one fine flake at a time.
