PETG vs. Polypropylene — The Science Behind Better Gold Pans

Two gold pans can look similar and still behave differently in the field. Material is one factor, and with an FDM-printed part the print orientation, wall structure, geometry, filament formulation, and finishing also matter.

Hobby Miner Outlet uses PETG for many of its rigid HMO Original prospecting products. HMO primarily prints with SUNLU PETG and also uses Creality PETG. Those brands publish useful room-temperature mechanical and heat-related data, but HMO has not identified a manufacturer specification that establishes a certified minimum service temperature for HMO's finished printed products.


What cold does to plastics

As temperature falls, many polymers become stiffer and may absorb impact differently. The exact behavior depends on the polymer, formulation, additives, geometry, manufacturing process, and the type of load applied. That means a generic material statement should not be treated as a finished-product temperature rating.

For HMO products, the relevant question is not simply whether PETG exists at a given temperature; it is whether the actual printed pan, sluice component, or high-banker part still performs its intended function after cold exposure and real handling.


What UV exposure changes

Ultraviolet exposure can age polymers over time, but the rate and effect vary with formulation, pigment, additives, exposure intensity, duration, and environment. HMO therefore does not publish a universal UV-life claim for PETG parts without product-specific evidence.


What 3D printing adds

FDM printing creates visible layer texture and lets HMO control geometry, wall structure, and iterative design changes without traditional tooling. That surface texture is real, but HMO has not yet established a quantified recovery advantage attributable specifically to layer lines. We therefore do not claim that printed layer texture acts as a proven secondary riffle system or guarantees higher fine-gold recovery.

Recovery performance depends on the complete system: riffle and pan geometry, water behavior, feed material, particle size, operator technique, and field conditions.


Why HMO uses PETG

For many HMO Original rigid products, PETG provides a useful combination of toughness, moisture resistance, dimensional stability, and additive-manufacturing flexibility. It also supports HMO's local production model: parts can be produced, inspected, revised, and re-tested in Oregon without waiting for injection-molding tooling changes.

That does not make PETG the best material for every application. Aluminum, HDPE, polypropylene, ABS, TPU, and other materials can be better choices depending on load, heat, abrasion, flexibility, weight, cost, and manufacturing method.


Our current cold-temperature claim

HMO does not currently publish a certified minimum operating temperature for its PETG prospecting products. Product-specific cold-performance testing is being developed. Any future numeric temperature claim should be tied to a defined HMO test method, the actual filament and print specification used, the product or specimen tested, and the observed pass/fail criteria.
