Gold prospector assembling a highbanker sluice system at a river — Hobby Miner Outlet setup guide

Highbanker Setup Guide: Step-by-Step Instructions for Success

Introduction to Highbanker Setup

A highbanker is one of the most efficient gold prospecting tools available, combining the power of a sluice with a recirculating water system. Proper setup is critical for maximizing gold recovery. Whether you're using our Fable Fire Mini-High Banker or the complete Pro Prospector Elite Bundle, this guide walks you through every step.

Pre-Setup Checklist

  • Highbanker unit with all components
  • Water pump with hose and fittings
  • Power source (battery, generator, or gas-powered pump)
  • 5 Piece Stacking Classifier Set (1/2" and 1/4" recommended)
  • Golden Samurai Pan for cleanup and testing
  • Buckets, shovel, snuffer bottle, and vials

Step 1: Choose Your Location

Position near a reliable water source. Set up close to your digging area — inside bends, bedrock cracks, behind boulders, and gravel bars with black sand are prime targets. For seasonal timing in the PNW, see our Pacific Northwest Seasonal Guide.

Step 2: Assemble the Highbanker

  1. Attach sluice box to frame and install sluice mats per manufacturer specs
  2. Position water reservoir bucket below sluice outlet
  3. Connect pump intake and discharge hoses, secure all clamps
  4. Ensure no kinks or restrictions in hoses

For mat selection, see our Sluice Mat Selection Guide.

Step 3: Set the Proper Angle

  • Standard: 5-7 degrees for most conditions
  • Steep (7-9 degrees): Fine gold or high clay content
  • Shallow (3-5 degrees): Larger gold or clean gravels

Start at 6 degrees, run water through, observe flow, then fine-tune.

Step 4: Water Flow Calibration

Start pump at low flow and gradually increase. Proper flow should cover the full sluice width, move material through riffles without washing gold over, and create visible turbulence in the riffles.

Step 5: Operations

Classify material first — screen through 1/2" then 1/4" for fine gold. Feed steadily, don't overload, and watch riffles for black sand concentration. Refill reservoir before it runs dry.

Cleanup Process

  1. Run clean water 1-2 minutes, then shut down pump
  2. Carefully remove riffles and wash concentrates into bucket
  3. Pan concentrates with the Golden Samurai

Conclusion

Proper highbanker setup is the foundation of successful gold recovery. Start conservative, test your tailings, and adjust throughout the day as conditions change.

And be a responsible prospector. Backfill your holes, pack out your trash, and leave every site better than you found it. Access to these places is a privilege worth protecting.
